Electric Propulsion Test Rig

The Clean Altitude Electric Aircraft Propulsion Experimental Dynamic Test Rig is ready and waiting to test your aircraft EPS. 

Clean Altitude is offering the rig for use by researchers and developers of Electric Aircraft Propulsion systems. The system is based on an electric sports car platform with the aircraft motor and propellers mounted above on a Fully Instrumented Dynamometer framework with Onboard Battery Pack and Control Systems.

The rig is capable of High-Speed Runway operations simulating Aircraft Take-Off, Climb and Cruise flight. Propulsion R&D requiring performance and efficiency measurements can be undertaken safely on the ground and without requiring extremely expensive large-scale wind-tunnels, which are currently unavailable in Australia, and rare worldwide.

Propulsion Test Rig

Worldwide aerospace propulsion R&D is currently focused on Electric and Hybrid-Electric Propulsion Systems (EPS). EPS is essential for many novel aircraft types and missions such as Urban Air Mobility (flying cars, air taxis, cargo drones etc) as well as the push toward Net Zero emissions and CO2 reduction targets for Light and Regional Transport Passenger and Cargo Aircraft.

Many new EPS are in R&D and early commercialisation but require rigorous ground testing and integration with different types of propellers and other subsystems to optimise performance and prove safety. The dynamic test-rig allows safer, easier technical optimisation of aircraft EPS.

Instrumented Electric Propulsion Rig

In order to prove safety and optimise an aircraft Electric Propulsion System (EPS), rigorous ground testing must be performed on components, subsystems and full system architecture. Presently EPS is developed in laboratory conditions and then integrated with the propeller and then full aircraft level testing.

The transition to full-scale Aircraft Level system testing is extremely expensive and risky. Much of the data required can be more easily generated using a ground based test rig capable of movement through the air to simulate flying conditions. This full-scale and full-motion data otherwise can only be generated with an extremely large, cost-prohibitive wind-tunnel.

Industry Experience

A significant amount of testing of the system occurred previously, exclusively for the original developer 'Contraelectric Ltd' in the UK. The test results were consistent with expected performance but the system was not offered for use commercially after ContraElectric's initial EPS development goals were achieved. Clean Altitude was formed as an Australian company, based at Caloundra to bring the test rig technology to Australia and exploit it for broader commercial research.
